Little baby Corbin came into this world a few days ago and has a defective heart that requires immediate surgery.
He was flown to Lubbock and then to Houston where he is at the Houston Children’s Hospital awaiting open heart surgery. His parents are with him and I know they would covet your prayers!
Currently the surgery is scheduled for Wednesday, August 20th, pending everything goes okay. The doctors have already postponed the surgery once, because he starting running a fever. Please, please, please pray for little Corbin, for healing, for his Mommy and Daddy that they will have faith and comfort, and for the Doctors and medical staff as they perform this very complex procedure.
A fund is being set up to help defray some of the medical cost for this family. If you would like to help, please PM me and I will let you know where you can give. Most importantly, we ask for your prayers!
Thanks and God Bless!

Update on little Corbin
The surgery has been moved to Thursday morning at 5am Texas time, so please keep baby Corbin and his family in your prayers. This is just the first of three surgeries that the little fellow will have to go through. It's an 8 hour procedure and will require highly skilled heart surgeons to perform it.
I know that his Mom and Dad are very scared right now, so if you are the praying kind, please say a prayer for them too! They are new to being parents and now they are also dealing with their sons very serious health issues! Please put them on your prayer list!

Now that I have permission to release all the details including the names of the parents and the bank information I would like to share the rest of the story with you!
Corbin Brockman, son of Dennis and Marley Brockman was born Friday, August 15, 2008 in Carlsbad. Corbin's heart is critically underdeveloped. He was born with Hypoplastic left heart syndrome, a rare type of congenital heart disease that is more common in males than in females. He will undergo a series of surgeries that will allow his heart to function properly. Hypoplastic left heart syndrome occurs when parts of the left side of the heart (mitral valve, left ventricle aortic valve, and aorta) do not develop completely.
The only possibility of survival is a connection between the right and the left side of the heart and its blood vessels, through which blood may pass. This is called a shunt. Babies are normally born with two of these connections (the foramen ovale and the ductus arteriosus), which normally close on their own a few days after birth.
If ductus arteriosus is allowed to close in a baby with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, however, the patient will quickly die because no blood will be pumped to the body.
As with most congenital heart defects, there is no known cause. Around 10% of patients with hypoplastic left heart syndrome will have other birth defects.
The first surgery, called the Norwood operation, occurs within the first few days of life. Stage I of the Norwood procedure consists of building a new aorta, and an artificial shunt is inserted to maintain blood flow to the lungs.
Afterwards, the baby usually goes home. The child will need to take one or more daily medicines and be closely followed by a pediatric cardiologist, who will determine when the second stage of surgery should be done.
Stage II of the operation is called the Glenn shunt or Hemifontan procedure. This procedure connects half of the veins carrying blue blood from the body (the superior vena cava) directly to blood vessels to the lungs to get oxygen. The surgery is usually done when the child is 4 - 6 months of age.
During stage I and II, the child may still appear somewhat blue (cyanotic).
Stage III, the final step, is called the Fontan procedure. The remainder of the veins carrying blue blood from the body (the inferior vena cava) is connected directly to the blood vessels to the lungs, and the right ventricle now serves as the only pumping chamber for the heart. This surgery is usually performed between the ages of 18 months and 3 years of age. After this final step, the baby is no longer blue (cyanotic).
Some patients may need more surgeries in their 20s or 30s if they develop hard to control arrhythmias or other complications of the Fontan procedure.
In some hospitals, heart transplantation is considered a better choice than the 3-step surgery process. However, there are few donated hearts available for small infants.
As you can see little Corbin is going to require extensive surgical procedures over the next few years of his life, maybe more.
His family will have to stay in Houston for several weeks at a time after each surgery.
The family has set up a fund at Wells Fargo Bank, deposits can be made into an account in the name of Dennis or Marley Brockman to help with expenses. Your generosity and prayers are appreciated.
At this time we have collected several hundred dollars for the family. I will keep you posted on how much money has come in for this little family. Their funds are limited and every dollar counts no matter how small it is. We are looking at having a yard sale to raise funds for them and I will let you know when we get it together!

Baby Corbin should be in his 8 hour heart surgery right now. He was to be taken in at 5am this morning for preparation and by 8am our time surgery should have officially started.
Please remember to pray for Corbin and the Doctors throughout this very delicate procedure!

Thank you for your prayers and for asking about little baby Corbin!
I spoke with a family member and Corbins surgery went well. It took longer than was expected, about 10 1/2 hours. He should be going into ICU where he will be monitored very closely. I learned that the family is planning on staying in Houston for the next 6 months while Corbin is going through the additional surgery and recovery.
Please continue to pray for both Corbin and the parents during this time, I know they would appreciate it! They are there with no transportation (except the shuttle) and very limited funds. I know the new Daddy has to return to work at some point, so the new Mommy will be staying behind to be with the baby. This is going to be very difficult on both of them.

| Yes She has also worked at CARC at the Child Development Center and is a volunteer at the church in the children's ministry. She is currently working on her masters degree program at NMSU for education to become a teacher. She is one of the giving, caring people that I have ever met.

| Our family is praying extra hard during these times. I can not imagine going through a time like that. Let us know what they need, and we can work on getting something around for them.

Lots of prayers for starters! Since the family will be forced to stay in Houston for an extended amount of time and they were not financially expecting to endure such a hardship, we are trying to raise funds for them here. We were able to deposit money into their account today and have more promised, but I know it won't even begin to make a dent in the extra cost of staying at the facility they are at, much less the medical bills. They have a 45 day time limit before they will have to find alternate housing. I have a friend who is looking into programs to help individuals with special need cases such as this to help with extra things such as immediate personal items, etc. We don't know if they have programs to help with the financial burden, but the hospital(s) may have someone that can tell us.
I did get a message today from Marley that little Corbin was going to get his first meal in nine days. I'm assuming that means he will get a bottle of formula for the first time. She was using an alternate method of feeding him, but now that is out of the question with him being in the critical care unit.
If anyone has ever had any experience in this kind of circumstance we are open to suggestions.
Thank you so much for your continued prayers for Corbin and his parents.

I did not see that a bank was set up for them. Is it set up for hardship so I and other people can donate to it? If so, could you give the info for me?
Thanks,
Wild Willy

Initially I had included the bank account number, but later removed for fear that someone might use it fraudulently.
If anyone is interested in giving they can send me a private message and I will give them the account number
I will send it to you WW. Thanks so much!

I just wanted to let everyone know that we have currently raised and deposited $580.00 into the Brockman's special account to help assist with their expenses. I know this doesn't sound like very much money, but every little bit helps. I know that others have deposited money directly into the account, so that money isn't included in this amount.
We made a donation (lock) box for them and every day the community is dropping cash and checks into it. I just wanted to say thank you to those who have given of their money and prayers! And the Brockmans wish to thank you! This has been a very difficult time for them. I know it will continue to be a challenge for the parents as they go through the next 6 months and beyond in their sons medical intervention.
Please continue to keep Corbin's health in your prayers.

On Friday little Corbin began having difficulty breathing and before long his little lungs began to collapse. One of them collapsed completely and the other was partially collapsed. He was rushed to the pediatric pulmonary ICU unit and the medical team went to work on him.
What could have been fatal turned out to be a dysfunction in baby Corbin's feeding tubes. Turns out the tubes had malfunctioned and began filling up his tiny little lungs with fluid, which caused the collapse.
His lungs are getting back to normal now and Mommy and Daddy are hoping that they'll be back into a normal hospital room soon. Please continue to pray for baby Corbin as he recovers from yet another medical issue. Especially pray that he doesn't end up catching pneumonia after the issues with his lungs.
God Bless You All
